With his urban plan, Cerdà envisioned an egalitarian city where no neighborhoods are distinguished from others, and public services are evenly distributed across all corners.~~The district is the result of one of the most splendid periods in the city’s history, when it definitively became the driving force of contemporary Catalonia, breaking away from its medieval past by tearing down the old city walls. The Eixample was built during the industrialization of Catalonia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The central part, Dreta de l’Eixample, became the neighborhood of the bourgeoisie, who introduced a unique style into their homes—Modernism.~~The Eixample consists of six neighborhoods: Dreta de l’Eixample, Antiga Esquerra de l’Eixample, Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample, Fort Pienc, Sagrada Família, and Sant Antoni.~~Cerdà’s urban plan was based on a large grid of perpendicular and transverse streets, all uniform except for two diagonal avenues—Diagonal and Meridiana—and the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. The point where these axes intersected was envisioned as the great communication hub of the Eixample, with a large planned square, Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes. With great precision, Cerdà foresaw the uniform distribution of service areas such as markets, social centers, churches, and large district parks.~~The blocks were not exactly square; their corners were chamfered to improve visibility. In each block, construction was only allowed on one or two sides, leaving the rest of the space for the residents’ gardens. The buildings were not to exceed three stories (16 meters) in height and were not to be very deep. Cerdà established these rules because he believed that citizens’ health depended on living in well-lit homes with clean air circulating from the surrounding gardens.~~Architects such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Maria Jujol, Antoni Gaudí, and many others gradually shaped the new district. Thus began a new style that moved away from the monotony of the dominant eclecticism of the time—Modernism. This style, present in buildings of great heritage value, makes the center of the district a unique architectural ensemble in all of Europe. Modernist architecture blended new techniques and materials with traditional decorative techniques like stucco, sgraffito, stained glass, and wrought iron. The work of artisans served the design and vision of the modernist architects.
